One of the scariest things for a homeowner to experience is a flooded basement, especially when you have no idea what to do. The most important advice we can recommend is to stay safe and let the experts help you with your situation. The following guidelines listed below can help recover your basement back to its clean and dry conditions, after a nasty story or an accident which are some of the main reasons for flooded basements.

Priority #1 – Stay Safe

Wet basement is safety hazard. Standing in water while handling any electrical device can cause a shock or eletroduction. The best scenario is to leave or avoid the flooded basement for as long as you can but if you must go into the basement, we recommend wearing rubber boots and to make sure that you can stay dry. Make sure to not touch any wet electrical wires or devices.

Priority #2 – What to Do When Your Basement Leaks?

There are a number of ways that water can get into your basement. So before calling a waterproofing contractor, it is smart to figure out what caused the flooding, if you can in a safely manner. Here are some steps to take if you encounter a basement water problem.

1. Determine the cause

It might be difficult to find out exactly what caused the flooded basement, but one thing you can do is to distinguish whether it is caused by plumbing leaks or water leaking into the basement from outside. A plumbing leak (from a water heater, a bad boiler valve or a frozen pipe) means that you need to call a plumber. However, if water is leaking through your foundation or through basement windows, call a basement waterproofing contractor.

2. Have standing water pumped out as soon as possible

If your basement is only partially flooded, you can suck up standing water using a wet-dry vacuum. You can also dispose of the extra water down the drain of a bathtub or sink as a last resort. Otherwise, you will need to call in a plumber or a disaster mitigation specialist to pump the water out. After pumping the basement, it may be necessary to run a dehumidifier to help dry out the area.

3. Remove materials and items that might attract mold.

If your basement is flooded, there will be some materials and items that can be dried out and saved, whereas others are best left discarded. Organic materials like paper, fabric, wood and leather will attract basement mold if they remain wet for more than a day or two. Dry out and save what you can; discard the rest if possible.

4. Take steps to control water outside the house.

Are your gutters and downspouts working effectively to direct roof runoff away from the house foundation? If not, correct problems with clogged or overflowing gutters, and install downspout extensions as necessary to protect the foundation from excessive hydrostatic pressure.

5. Protect your basement from plumbing leaks.

Make sure to replace an old tank-type water heater before the interior rusts out and causes major basement flood. Rubber supply hose for your washing machine should also be replaced if they show signs of cracking. Check water supply and drain lines for leaks, and protect water lines from freezing and bursting.

6. Replace leaky basement windows and window wells

During wet weather, old window wells can fill with water, which then leaks into the basement through gaps and cracks in old basement windows. This problem can be eliminated by installing new basement windows along with a new window well with a matching well cover. These upgrades will do more than prevent water leaks; they’ll also make your basement more attractive and more energy efficient.

Although, some of these improvements you might perform yourself, majority of them require professional advice. That is why the most efficient solution would be to look for waterproofing basement company in Toronto or area where you are living and leave all these problems to be resolved by waterproofing contractor.
